Family vacation
We packed a lot of fun into our relatively short 5-day weekend vacation last week. The whole thing came about because we were attending the wedding of our friend Michael Justiss in Buffalo, NY. Because we were heading up that way, it seemed like a nice opportunity to see Niagra Falls. Although we had to stay on the US side (because I accidentally demolished my passport after the Asia trip by leaving it in my pants while they were washed), the forceful beauty of the falls is always inspiring. We also decided to make a stay-over in Ithaca (the first time I had been back since graduating from Cornell in 2000) to show Gavin and Lorrie the Cornell campus and do a little exploring of the gorges in the area. While we were there I thought it would be a good idea to have Gavin apply for early admission, but clearly the highlight of this stop was the hotel pool. As you can see from this 2 part video sequence, Gavin's first "swimming" experience was a real hit...despite the fact that we got down to the pool about 2 hours after his bedtime.
To break up the trip a little bit, we decided to make a stop half way in Cleveland, OH, giving us a chance to visit the zoo on a wonderfully sunny day. A nice perk about all the traveling that I've been doing recently means that the 4 nights in 4-start hotels were all free - complements of rewards programs. We've collected a few of the photos from the trip in a gallery over on Picassa:In addition, we've added a few other random photos to Gavin's 8 month album, which we'll be closing out soon now that he is just about to turn the corner on 9 months. Crazy!
